Pillow Materials Explained

A pillow is a small component of a complete bed, but it is essential. The right pillow can transform your sleep. Selecting one was once a simple matter. Today, you have many, many options with pillows made with everything from feathers to gel to buckwheat. It’s great to have options, but it can also become overwhelming. Here’s a simple rundown.

Down and Feather Pillows

Believe it or not, these are not the same materials. Down comes from the layer underneath the outer feathers of a bird. It is very soft but compresses easily, so expect to re-fluff often. Feathered pillows are not as soft but are less expensive and offer a similar experience.

Feather Down vs. Down Alternative

Try a down alternative if you have an ethical conflict with using down or duck or goose feathers but love the feel. The material is synthetic and designed to be similar to down. These pillows cost less and are hypoallergenic. The experience is not quite the same as real down, but it’s very close.

Polyester Fill

A classic alternative to down and feathers is polyester fill. The main benefit of this type of pillow is the cost. It is one of the most inexpensive materials for pillows. The downsides include poor breathability, making you feel too hot, and lumpiness.

Memory Foam Pillows

Choose memory foam if you like a pillow that contours to your body. It’s versatile enough to accommodate a range of sleeping styles and provides good support. Some people find memory foam in a pillow to be too firm. You can also find shredded memory foam pillows, which allow you to add or remove material to change the firmness.

Latex Pillows

Latex is a good mix of firmness and softness. It provides good support but feels less firm than memory foam. You can find it in a solid or shredded version. Of course, watch out for this type of pillow if you or your partner is allergic to latex.

Gel Pillows

A newer trend in pillows is the combination of cooling gel with latex or memory foam. Gel can be very firm and contouring, so mixing it with the other materials softens the pillow. The main benefit of gel is that it feels cool, so this is a good choice if you sleep hot.

Buckwheat Pillow

New to the pillow market, at least in the west, is buckwheat fill. If you’re looking for an extra firm pillow made from natural materials, put this one on your list. A buckwheat hull pillow will conform to your shape and provide excellent support and breathability. On the other hand, the hulls can be a little noisy if you shift in your sleep.

Organic Pillows

If sustainability matters, you can find pillows made with all organic materials. Look for certification to know for sure. Many materials can be used organically, including cotton, latex, bamboo, and buckwheat. You can also find organic down pillows with responsibly sourced materials.

The choice of pillowis more complicated today than ever before. While it can feel overwhelming at times, the variety is a good thing. It allows you to find the perfect pillow for your best sleep.
